This is the hardest weekend of the year for me As you take time to celebrate this great day, please take the time to visit the grave of a fallen soldier. You do not have to know him I do. Tell him you came on my behalf. Take your child or grandchild or a neighborhood of kids along and tell them about the sacrifice that this one gave for freedom. Tell them what this day really stands for At the same time reflect on the other countries that gave their young to defend that same freedom Not a day goes by that I do not Thank the ones that paid that ultimate price so I could live and enjoy a life Not a day goes by that I do not hurt for the ones I could not save and agonize over having to make the decision of who I could help and had the best chance of survival Those brothers depended on me to care and treat for them and oh so many would tell me Doc if the day comes that you have to decide who to help ,do what you have to do we understand So many stood up and took a bullet or a piece of shrapnel for me, so many gave their life making sure I got to someone that was down and yelling for help These men it seems when my time was up would stand up and say take me, Doc still has a lot to do and is needed back home. I spent 11 months in the rice paddies and bush of Vietnam. Most medics spent six months. I have all the medals and the citations but would gladly give them all up to have those lives back So take a moment and make a visit, as you may be the only one that goes there. Tell that soldier that because of him you know me and tell him that I hope as he looks down and sees what I have done with my life that I have done him proud . Tell him I have never forgotten what he gave up so I could have a family and enjoy watching 4 sons grow up and be with a wife that I came back to and still together after 47 years Take your young and remind them of what was given up so Doc could eat BBQ, drink beer and be with friends It only takes a few minutes out of your weekend. Pick up a Flag and place on a grave of a soldier let him Know I am thinking of him . He may not have family that can do it I can't make them all I wish I could but to those that did not come back I thank you and hold you in the highest esteem Do not thank a Veteran that is alive . Go Thank the ones that aren't They will never know how grateful I am as well as my family To all of you may you have a very happy weekend and enjoy the freedom we have to be able to do it
